Oregon Tech Plans Three Day Celebration for Earth Day

Oregon Tech invites members of the community to celebrate Earth Day through three days of events on campus and downtown, according to a news release.

Oregon Tech Earth Day celebration events will include:

  • Wednesday, April 18: 2 to 3 p.m.
  • Campus energy tour starting at the College Union at Oregon Tech, 3201 Campus Drive
  • Friday, April 20: 3 to 6 p.m.
  • Campus garden celebration, at the arboretum at Oregon Tech
  • Saturday, April 21:
  • 10 a.m. to noon: work party at the Native Plant Garden at Oregon Tech. Learn about native plant communities in the Klamath Basin and help beautify the garden with Oregon Tech faculty, a U.S. Fish & Wildlife biologist, the Sustainability Club, and students from Oregon Tech’s natural sciences department. Free native milkweed seeds will be given to participants. Tools will be provided; bring gloves if you have them.
  • 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.: Sustainapalooza and Urban Farm Tour, Sugarman’s Corner at North Sixth and Main streets.
  • 1 to 3 p.m.: Arboretum Appreciation Day. Be greeted at the Arboretum at Oregon Tech by the Sustainability Club and take a tour of the arboretum with guides from the Klamath Tree League. Join the Sustainability Club and see the first ever Oregon Tech Organic Garden unveiled, complete with composting, also within the arboretum grounds.

Oregon Tech’s Arboretum is located along the east (uphill) corner of campus near the softball field and student housing. Parking is available along the roadside by the arboretum. Oregon Tech’s native garden is located at the northwest corner of campus near Cornett Hall; the prominent hill at that end of campus is the native garden.

Celebrating the outdoors at Sustainapalooza

Join the Great Outdoor Alliance from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 21 at Sugarman’s Corner for Sustainapalooza.

Activities will include:

■ A race to clean in a Trash Scavenger Hunt

■ Admire (and vote on) entries in the Storm Drain Art Contest

■ Take home a seedling to add to (or start) your garden

■ Turn trash into a community art piece

■ Decorate your own “Poop Fairy” sign to humorously remind dog walkers to clean up after their pets

■ Learn how to integrate more sustainable products into your home

The Klamath County Library is sponsoring a team for the Storm Drain Art Contest – teens ages 12 to 18 can help plan the design at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, April 19 at the downtown library, and decorate the team’s storm drain at 3:30 p.m. Friday, April 20.
